It’s a fact known around the world that buying and moving house is an expensive, time-consuming, and stressful activity. Things go wrong; money needs spending and time will drag. However, there are a few things you can do to ease this financial stress.

Take a look at your utility bills

Whether you are buying an apartment, a home in the country, or a large town-house, it is likely that your current energy providers won’t be giving you the best deal. Moving house is an excellent excuse to reassess this, but you will need to be prepared to pay an exit fee if you are terminating your contract before its end date. However, your overall savings should trump this one-off cost and there are many providers out there who can cater for what you need. Selectra Energy Comparison are just one company who can put the legwork in for you, meaning that you can concentrate on moving house!

Be brutal with your things

You will likely find that the cost of your removal will sit largely on the volume of possessions that you will be moving. It’s easy to accumulate things that we don’t need, such as old sports equipment, clothes that don’t fit us anymore and furniture that just doesn’t go with our style, so now is a great time to go through everything and chuck out what you don’t want. Of course, this can be a time-consuming exercise, especially if you find yourself getting nostalgic, but it’s a great way to save money.

You may also find that some of your unwanted clothes and possessions are in good enough quality to sell on, so get listing everything on eBay and make a bit of money as you go!

Invest in a house survey

To save money on expensive repair bills in the future, make sure you invest in an independent surveyor to go and check out your new home. They will be able to point out anything that might need fixing – such as dodgy electrics or damp – and advise on how you should proceed. You will likely be able to either reduce the cost of the property or require the current owner to fix all of these things before a sale is agreed.

Hunt for cardboard boxes

There are spare cardboard boxes everywhere, especially in your local supermarkets, so try to avoid buying them if you can! It may also be possible to borrow some from your moving company, ensuring that they are of high quality and aren’t going to split the second you put something heavy in them! If you have backpacks and luggage, you can also fill these up with items, as well as stuffing bed-linen with unbreakables. Not only will you be saving money, but you will be helping the environment a little bit too.

Use up all your food

It would be wasteful to chuck out the last odds and ends of food that you have hanging around the house just before a move, so try to consume everything you have in the cupboards and make some creative meals. Beans on toast will get boring after a while, so try whipping up something slightly different for you and your family! By using everything up, you will also save on eating out in restaurants or ordering in takeaway food, which is common when moving house.
